EVA MIRIAM CURTIS 1928 - 2009 On August 17, 2009 at St. Boniface Hospital, Eva Miriam Curtis, beloved wife of the late Frederick Curtis passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Miriam was born on September 18, 1928, the youngest daughter of the late Albert and Eva Sutton. She attended Mulvey and Gordon Bell Schools. In her youth, she was a member of Young United Church. Miriam was a cost clerk for Systems Equipment Ltd. until her marriage to Fred in 1951, when she chose to stay at home and raise their four children. In 1965, Miriam's mother made her home with them, and was part of the family until her death in 1978. Miriam's gentle, practical warmth filled her home. As a family, they enjoyed camping, birding and walking in the woods. She loved her garden and her books, and wrote and published her own short stories and poetry. As her family grew to include six grandchildren, they too shared her joy and ever present sense of humour. She was complex and intelligent, had a quote for everything and a smile for everyone. She lived each day in grace and hope. Miriam was a member of John Black United Church. She volunteered for the Red Cross, sewing for Creations for eight years and helping at Emergency Services. She knit 300 pairs of mitts each year and donated them through the Red Cross, the church, Northern communities and local schools, anywhere children had cold hands. For many years, she was a member of the East Kildonan Horticultural Society. She was an associate member of Canadian Pacific Pensioners, and a member of the Manitoba Archaeological Society and the Post-Polio Network. Miriam was predeceased by her beloved husband Fred on September 8, 1995. She is survived by her son Martin (Robyn) and their children Robert and Andrew; her daughter Ellen and her children Christopher and Laura; her son Daniel (Kelly) and their children Nicholas and Hannah; and her daughter Jane. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Eva Sutton, her brother Richard Sutton and by her sisters Audrey Smith of Clinton, PEI and Marion Kennedy of Calgary, Alberta. She is survived by her sister-in-law Susan Sutton of Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame, with (Reverend) Heather Sandylands officiating. The service will terminate at the chapel. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to John Black Memorial United Church, 898 Henderson Highway, Winnipeg, MB R2K 3T4, or the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 0C8.
