Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER KLAAS ANEMA The Anema family announces with deepest sorrow the peaceful passing of their father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Peter, on Wednesday, August 19, 2009; at the age of 82 years. He will be forever missed by his children Kathryn (Thomas), Janet, Stephen (Jane), Bob and David (Gail); grandchildren, Stewart (Nadine), Kara, James, Travis, Beth, Becki and Tory; great-grandchildren, Kaley, Michael and Nathan. He is also survived by his sister Marguerite (John) and brother Brian (Edith) as well as many nephews and nieces. Dad was born in Winnipeg on December 18, 1926 to Klaas and Marie Anema. The oldest of three siblings he grew up in St. Germain on the family market garden farm. He began his education at St. Germain School, graduating from Glenlawn Collegiate. He met and married Jean (nee Speed) at St. Vital United Church on June 8, 1951. They established their home in St. Germain and started raising a family. Dad continued working on the family farm and also raised minks. He then went to work in Plant Sciences at the University of Manitoba, retiring with more than 30 years of service. While his children were growing up, Dad was very busy in the community. He coached multiple sports out of Greendell Park Community Centre. where he was social convener and also helped build the community centre. He was involved in Boy Scouts for many years. Dad and Mom were active in square dancing and Couples Club at St. Vital United Church. Dad walked three times a week at Reh-Fit for many years. Most recently he was a faithful volunteer at Riverview Health Centre. Dad and Mom enjoyed travelling, the highlight being a trip to meet family in Holland the year he retired. They also enjoyed the great outdoors, gardening and especially camping at Birds Hill Park with friends and family. After losing his beloved wife of 50 years in 2002, Dad continued to share his love for camping at Birds Hill Park with his family which now included grandchildren and great-grandchildren right up until August of this year. Special Tribute by Becki: He was lovingly known as Grandpa by us grandchildren and as Old Papa by three great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a caring grandfather who always had a warm hug to give and a few extra loonies in his pocket to share with us. With the help of his motorized scooter, Grandpa would tailgate us on our bikes to urge us up the steepest slope at Birds Hill, on a path he rode faithfully every day while he camped. He often sent our aunty and us on a trail ride by horseback, waiting dutifully for us to return so we could enjoy the ride back to camp together. Grandpa showed his love for birds by setting up a feeder and bird bath for them in each campsite he stayed in. He always had breakfast waiting for my sister and I when we camped with him, and was never too busy with his newspaper to help on a word search or give input on a game of Scrabble or let us win at crib. I love you Grandad and I'll miss you. The family gratefully thanks the staff of Victoria Hospital fourth floor for their care and concern and would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Salem for being more than a family doctor to all of us. In accordance with Dad's wishes there will be no formal funeral service, and a private interment will take place at St. Vital Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to be made to the Riverview Health Centre, Reh-Fit Centre or a charity of choice. We are so grateful to our brother Bob who kept Dad going over the last few years and made it possible for him to continue living in the family home. We can never thank you enough. Dad we will miss you.
