Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS NICHOLSON It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our Dad, Doug, on Friday, August 14, 2009, at the Grace Hospital, after the past few years of failing health, while residing at Oakview Place Nursing Home. Remaining to forever cherish Doug's memory are his son Garry, wife Cathy and grandson Jeremy; daughter Janis (Dean Pickell); brother Richard (wife Dora predeceased in 2001) and niece Nelda Bailey (husband Tom) of Surrey BC. Doug's wife Svava (Erl) predeceased him in November of 1994, just seven months away from their 50th wedding anniversary. Doug turned 85 years of age on May 21. He was born and raised in St. James - Assiniboia. Doug joined the Winnipeg Free Press in 1941. After a few months he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. Upon his discharge, he resumed his association with the Free Press in 1946. After the war, Doug married Svava Erlendson, who was also an R.C.A.F. veteran. Ever since the personalized license plates were issued in Manitoba, Dad proudly displayed Mom's name on his car's license plate (SVAVA). After 45 years with the Free Press, Doug retired. Before and after retirement, Dad and Mom enjoyed their many trips to Hawaii with their close friends Alex and Del Ritchie. Dad loved to garden, and won many awards and accolades for his expertise and hours of work he put into beautifying the lawn and flower gardens at our family home on Amherst Street. In compliance with Dad's wishes, a private family interment has taken place in the St. James Anglican Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Cannon Murray Still. The family wishes to thank the staff at Oakview for the many years of kindness and care for our Dad. Treasure our Dad, God, In your garden of rest. For to us in this world, He was the best.
