GUENTER HOPPENSACK It is with deep sorrow the family announces the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle Guenter Hoppensack on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Grace Hospital at the age of 83 years. Remaining to forever cherish Guenter's memory are his wife Margaret; children Michael, David (Barb), Nigel, Kevin and fiancé Brenda and Margaret; grandchildren Brittany, Danielle and Justin and nephews and niece in Germany and England. He was predeceased by parents Karl and Martha Hoppensack; sister Irene and brother-in-law Fred Pechstein, and brothers Walter and Karl-Heinz. Guenter was born in Berlin, Germany on October 6, 1925 and moved to Canada after the war and began working on a farm near McCreary, Manitoba before settling in Winnipeg in 1954. He was working as a mechanic when he met Mom and they married in 1957. Guenter then began working for the Canadian National Railway as a diesel mechanic in 1966 until his retirement in 1990. Many wonderful times were spent with his family and friends at home and the cottage he and Mom built near Arnes where his skills at fixing and tinkering were frequently called upon. He enjoyed pro-wrestling, gardening and the great outdoors and spent many hours watching and feeding the birds, squirrels and deer as long as they kept out of his garden. Later in life, after much prodding from Mom, he enjoyed traveling making many trips to Europe, England and Hawaii, right up until this spring. He developed and maintained many friendships that were greatly cherished. After retiring, he began a new role in life, babysitting and spending time with his grandchildren which provided great happiness to the end of his life. A private family viewing and funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue. Interment followed in St. Vital Cemetery, with Pastor Al Letkeman, presiding. Pallbearers were his children and dear family friend Darrin Muzyka. A special thank you to nurses Stephanie and Parva on the fifth floor at Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations in Guenter's memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 500-55 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1L8.
