GEORGE HOBSON ALLEN George, beloved husband of Elise, passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Center on August 22, 2009. George was born in England on September 30, 1922, immigrated with his family to Canada in 1928, and later returned to England with the RCAF during the war years. He earned his BA and BSW degrees at the University of Toronto, then completed his Masters degree in Social Work at Teachers College, Columbia University. For 36 years, he worked in administrative positions for the YMCA in Toronto, Edmonton and Winnipeg. After retiring, he became an active volunteer with Age and Opportunity and the United Way. He was always interested in learning and enjoyed Elder Hostel and Creative Retirement programs and courses. Over the years, he also taught himself woodworking. For 58 years, he and his wife Elsie had enjoyed life together. He is also survived by his three sons: Andrew (Dorothy) of Colchester, England; Martin (Faye) of Crystal City, Manitoba and Eric (Wendy) of Winnipeg. He was the proud grandfather of three granddaughters: Jennifer, Kimberley, Lisa; five grandsons: Nicholas (Hope), Michael, Tyler, Trevor, Jordan; and four great-grandchildren: Jacob, Lilly, Alexis, Roxanne. Also surviving is one sister Dorothy Brown of Scarborough, Ontario. He loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He will be greatly missed. In keeping with George's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Road United Church Memorial Fund, 613 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3L8 or a charity of one's choice.
