Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAVID WAYNE STILL May 19, 1958 - August 22, 2009 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden death of our brother, uncle and dear friend David. David was predeceased by his parents Harvey and Elsie Still and his beloved dog, Blue. He is survived by his sister Cheryl (Jim) Toth and brother Allan (Tab) Still, nephews and nieces Jeff (Francine), Mike (Kara), and Lorraine (Ryan) Still, Johanna (Jason), Dan (Kara), and Liz (Gavin) Kristolaitis, and his only great-nephew Hunter Sarrazin. David was born in Blind River, Ontario and spent most of his growing up years in Thunder Bay, Ontario. David's love of his family remained a priority even though they were spread across the country. He took great pride in being an uncle to his much loved nieces and nephews, a love which was returned ten-fold. His love was also evident in his dedication and unfailing support of his parents in their final months. David was a (baby) brother who could always be relied on. He had a generosity of spirit, wonderful sense of humour and infectious laugh. In Thunder Bay, David developed an early interest in sign language which became his passion and shaped his career. In Winnipeg, he began work as a sign language interpreter and instructor at Red River College. His work took him all over the country before he finally settled in Vancouver, BC in 1988, where he accepted a position as an instructor at Douglas College in the Program of Sign Language Interpretation. Two years later he, along with partners, opened Still Interpreting, Inc.; he was proud to say that it was the first privately owned ASL-English interpreting company in the country. In the fall of 1999 he graduated with a Masters of Education from Simon Fraser University and went on to open Still Learning Resources. He was a visionary in his field and in 2006 received the BC Innovation Award in Educational Technology. His commitment to his profession was demonstrated by his role as a founding member of both the provincial and national associations of sign language interpreters. He worked relentlessly to establish standards in the field of ASL-English interpreting and was a man of passion who inspired others to find theirs. David was a wonderful, caring person who was a mentor, instructor and friend to many. He will be deeply missed by family and friends too numerous to mention, and by his beloved dog Turner. A memorial service for David will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009. Reception to follow.
