Date of Passing: Aug 24, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryETHEL EVELYN (HARLAND) MCLEOD (1915 - 2009) Evelyn died peacefully on August 24, 2009, with family by her side, after struggling mightily and bravely over the past few years with medical issues. But the greatest part of her life was lived with vigour, enthusiasm, warmth, graciousness, and the generosity of welcoming people of all kinds into her home and her life. She proudly called herself a homemaker , actively creating a sense of home wherever she was. She extended warm friendship and love to all. She particularly liked intelligent, witty, engaged conversation about politics, religion, social change - the ways of the world. A woman of strong and abiding faith, she was a deeply engaged member of the United Church of Canada. Evelyn had an extraordinary memory, with a tenacious attention to detail. Her passion for living was inspiring to all who knew her - and she was still making friends at 94. A prairie beginning, early professional life as a registered nurse, and retirement on Bowen Island all shaped Evelyn's life. She is survived by her husband Bruce, her soul mate for 68 years; her brother Earle (Florence) in Calgary; daughter Reta (Ian), son John (Sharon), daughter Deborah (John); grandchildren Layla, Emma, Monique, John, Rachel, Meredith, David, Amy; and great-grandson Emmanuel. A service was held at the Bowen Island United Church on August 27 at 2:00 p.m. Evelyn supported the United Church of Canada and the Stephen Lewis Foundation (Grandmothers-to-Grandmothers Campaign). Should you desire, donations to either of these in her memory would be appreciated.
