GORDON LESLIE SWAIN June 11, 1922 - August 26, 2009 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Swain. Predeceased by his wife of 57 years Jean, his sons Bill and Ted, and granddaughter Heather. Survived by his son Les (Linda), daughters-in-law Joan, Lorraine and Sherron, grandchildren Dylan, Lesley, David, Jennifer, Natalie and Kristina, and great grandchildren Amelia, Violet, and Liam. Gordon was born and grew up at 304 Ferry Road in St. James. Times were tough during the Depression and Gordon quit school in Grade 10 because he could get a job and helped to support his parents and siblings. In 1939 he joined the RAF (later the RCAF) where he served in Ceylon, India, and Burma. Upon returning to Canada, he took his training as a public health inspector at Ryerson Tech. He married Jean in 1937 and together raised their three sons in St. Vital. During his long career in the provincial civil service, he rose to become the Chief Public Health Inspector and Director of the Office of Residential Care. No slouch, our Gordon, retirement was a busy time. He and Jean loved to Square Dance and together helped to organize many conventions in Manitoba. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and continued to indulge himself in his stamp collection. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Interment will take place in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Glen Lawn Reception Centre. Many thanks to the nurses and doctors at Health Sciences Centre Dialysis Unit for all the care they gave to Gordon these last four years. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Victoria General Hospital, The Swain Family Trust at the Winnipeg Foundation or to a charity of your choice. GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 982-7550
