BRIAN PETER BARTEL
Date of Passing: Aug 27, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBRIAN PETER BARTEL After a determined battle with cancer, Brian slipped away peacefully on August 27, 2009. He had celebrated his 52nd birthday only a month earlier. Brian is survived by his best friend and soul mate, his wife Kathie (McMullan); his beloved parents Peter and Leona Bartel; his siblings, Sharon (Harry) Doak, Kevin (Desiree), Bruce, and Ken (Gwen) Bartel; his nieces and nephews and by Kathie's mother Betty McMullan, brother Patrick and sister Linda (Enzo) DeLuca. He was predeceased by his grandparents, John and Margaret Letkeman and Abram and Katherine Bartel. From a very young age, Brian displayed a love for speed. He remembered clearly his first tricycle on which his dad had mounted a speedometer. From that point, he went on to drag race at Gimli, and followed the circuit after his own car blew up . He loved Ford Mustangs and owned seven of them over his lifetime. Brian was also a passionate football fan. His favorite teams were the Denver Broncos and of course his beloved Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Post-game discussions, analysis and critique would go on for hours and sometimes days. His brother Ken recalls spending the weekend of the November 1986 blizzard with The Bearded One , watching the 1984 Grey Cup game over and over again. Thanks to his parents, Brian developed a love for travel, and particularly driving trips. Every summer, the family would pile into the car and go somewhere different for vacation. Dad would tell them, Look around you as we're driving because you don't know when you'll be back this way. It was a philosophy Brian carried with him his entire life. Kathie is particularly grateful that they were able to take one final road trip this summer, to visit her sister in Vernon, BC. Kathie would like to thank the nurses in the Chemo treatment room who always made Brian laugh and gave him a sense of hope, clinical nurses Lori, Tamara and Janice in Gamma Knife, Dr. Fatoye for his humor and compassion, and the nursing staff on GD-4 for their care in the final days of his life, especially Ogechi, Justin and Morgan. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Kirkfield Park United Church, 472 Kirkfield Street. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, R3B 1M3, would be appreciated. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715

In the early 1960s when I was much younger, my family moved to Lansdowne Avenue in Winnipeg’s north end, and Brian who lived five houses down (towards Inkster Blvd) became my first friend in the new neighborhood. We spent many hours together playing in his yard or mine, but would have to stop when Brian’s mother came out on the front door step and yelled: SONNY!! .. and he would have to go home. Brian and I were both sad when his family moved away. We exchanged phone numbers and continued our friendship for a time over the phone. I was saddened when I saw this obituary. 52 is too young. The thoughtful comments made about Brian’s life describe a wonderful person who I would have liked to have known for a longer time. My (belated) heartfelt condolences to Brian’s family. - Posted by: Harry (childhood friend) on: Aug 19, 2018
