LAURIE LOUIS DIAMOND May 4, 1937 - August 3, 2009 With great sadness, we announce the passing of Laurie Louis Diamond on August 3, 2009. Laurie was a quiet man, who held his joy and sorrow close to his heart, but when others got to know him, they could see how he cherished the life and family that surrounded him. When he lost Peggy, his loving wife of 50 years, he opened his life to doing new things and seeing new people, and he stayed close to the centre of the family he had built with her. He continued selling books to school libraries across Manitoba, visited a local seniors club, reunited with old friends, and joined a men's choral group. He volunteered on the board of his condo community and made sure the pool was maintained, so he could enjoy swimming and pizza with his grandchildren. Laurie enjoyed doing little things for people, and his love was hidden in these everyday gestures. He brought many books for his grandchildren and knew what each one was interested in. He attended all of his family's sports games and musical performances, making sure to show his support, and, in his quiet way, to show how proud he was. Laurie wasn't full of hugs and kisses, but he found a way to let others know he loved them and was thinking about them. Laurie loved music, and he and Peggy passed that gift on to the next generations. He grew up in the north end of Winnipeg and went to St. John's high school and to Hebrew school. He also studied fencing and performed in operettas. When he met, and later married, Peggy, they bought a house in Garden City, built a rock garden, and raised three children in a wonderful home, with a Jewish education and four dogs they all loved. Laurie was very active with local dog shows, where he met some good friends. One day, Peggy convinced him to adopt a cat. After a second cat showed up at the cottage, he eventually became a cat lover as well. Laurie and Peggy reached their 50th anniversary last year. Fifty years seems not so long ago when looking back on a life well lived. The family they built is big and crowded when all together, but it is also close and strong. Laurie leaves behind many who will miss the times shared, and who are saddened to miss future times that had been anticipated. He leaves daughter Laura, her husband Les, and their children Jesse, Shea, Levi, and Bennett; daughter Lisa, her husband Rob, and their children Dale, Skyler and Corey; son Jeff, his wife Leslie, and their children Daniel, Sarain, and Elisheva; mother Gertie, and sister Charne. He also leaves behind many good friends and extended family who knew the lovable Laurie inside the quiet exterior. Laurie, Dad, Zaide, we love you, and we miss you very much.
