EDITH MARION BURGESS (GRAY) April 25, 1912 - September 4, 2009 After a long life filled with laughter and love with her family by her side at Grace General Hospital Marion Burgess passed away gently on September 4, 2009. Marion leaves behind her daughter Lorraine and grandchildren Pamela and Craig. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Burgess in 1975, her parents Edith and James Gray, sister Norma and brothers Jack (Helen) and Jim (Betty) and Kenny. Surviving to cherish her memory are sisters Bessie Greer, Jean Dunsmore, Florence Ralph and brother Lloyd (Arlene) and many nieces and nephews. Mother was born in Wapella Saskatchewan and grew up in Rocanville. After graduation from grade 12 she left home to pursue a career in nursing and in 1934 graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital as a registered nurse. After several years of working at the General, many in teaching and supervisory positions, mom left to marry the love of her life Francis Kenneth Burgess. Mom stayed active outside the home always taking part in school associations and greatly enjoyed her work with her Nurses Alumni. This year marked the 75th Anniversary of her graduation and she attended the annual dinner as one of their most senior alumni. A special highlight was the year when she was asked to give a speech about what it was like to be a nurse in 1934. In one word mother could be described as a Generous woman. Giving freely of her help, unconditional love and support and in doing so no personal sacrifice was too great. She was the binding force and anchor of her family. To learn from her example was her greatest legacy. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glint on snow I am the sunlight on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain When you awake in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight I am the soft starlight at night Do not stand at my grave and cry I am not there, I did not die At mother's request a private family ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Marion's honour to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
