ALDA JOHANNA WESTMACOTT (nee KRISTJANSON) 1922 - 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alda Westmacott on Friday, September 11, 2009, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Left to cherish Alda's memory are her daughter Betty Anne (Phil) Miller of Saskatoon; grandchildren, Jennifer, Darren and Jordan Miller; brother Ragnar (Larry) (Helen) Kristjanson; sisters-in-law, Lois, Joan, Farida and Jean Kristjanson; and many special nieces and nephews. Alda was predeceased by her husband Monty Westmacott, daughter Patricia, sister Maria, and brothers, Baldur, Kris, Albert, Burbank and Leo. Alda was born in Gimli, Manitoba on May 26, 1922, the fourth child of Hannes and Elin Kristjanson. Alda left Gimli to attend nursing school in Winnipeg, graduating from the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1945. She married Monty Westmacott in 1947 and they settled in Winnipeg, where she worked as a private duty nurse until the arrival of her daughters, Betty Anne in 1949 and Patricia in 1953. Throughout her life, she continued to be known for the expert, tender care she provided to family members in need. She enjoyed golf and curling, particularly when she was playing on The Bonspiel Circuit with her Curling Girls. Alda took a genuine interest in everyone she met, and she found great pleasure in spending time with family, whether visiting with her brothers and sisters at the cottage in Gimli, following the lives of her nieces and nephews as they grew up and started families of their own, or sharing holidays and special occasions with her daughters and grandchildren in Winnipeg or Saskatoon. Gimli always held a special place in her heart, and she took particular joy in attending this summer's family reunion at the lake. She will be missed for her thoughtfulness, her intellect and sharp wit, and the love she shared with her entire family. The family would like to extend special thanks to the exceptional home care workers and staff on Ward 4 South at the Grace Hospital for their loving attention to Alda. At Alda's request, there will be no service. An informal gathering to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Neil Bardal Inc. 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alda's memory may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, R3E 0V9 or to the Arthritis Society, 105-386 Broadway, Winnipeg or to a charity of choice.
