DONNA CATHERINE MITCHELL (nee MORRISON) Donna Mitchell passed away peacefully with family members by her side on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the age of 88 at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg. Donna was born on March 12, 1921. She married John (Jack) Mitchell on August 23, 1947, in Winnipeg. They moved to Dauphin, Manitoba, and then, Edmonton, Alberta, before returning to Winnipeg in 1950; their union lasted 62 years. Donna will be dearly missed by John and their children Shar (Winnipeg), Gerald (Australia) and Donald (Calgary) and their families: Shar's husband, Dr. Redwan Moqbel, Shar's children Dr. Gabriel Lenz, Colby Lenz and Asher Lenz; Gerald and his wife, Ann and their children, Jacquelin, Gregg and Bradley; Donald and his partner, Danielle Coulter. Donna grew up in Winnipeg and enjoyed many summers with her cousins on their farm in Pipestone, Manitoba. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Winnipeg General Hospital and was the class of 1946 A's valedictorian. Thereafter, she worked as a public health nurse in Winnipeg's north end. In later years, Donna volunteered for the Women's Auxiliary at the Misericordia Hospital and tutored English as a second language. In her free time, Donna loved to read, bake, play bridge with her life-long friends and golf with the Ladies 9-Holers . Her remarkable artistic talent found expression in evocative sculptures and vivid oil paintings. She will be fondly remembered for her warmth, compassion, kindness and distinctive humour, as well as her creative talent. The Mitchell family will forever be indebted to the T6 Deer Lodge staff who treated Donna with such loving care during the last seven years of her life. There will not be a funeral service as per Donna's wishes. However, there will be a gathering of family and friends to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or The Red Cross. Condolences can be forwarded to: sharmitchell19@gmail.com or 3E-229 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg R3M 0E6.
