JANET LOUGHLIN (JAN) MCQUEEN (nee MCMORLAND) It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden death of Janet Loughlin (Jan) McQueen (nee McMorland) at her residence in Lumby, BC on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Jan leaves to mourn her husband George; her children, Margaret (Matt) McLenehan, Janet, Alistair and James (Lorie Srivastava); six grandchildren, Shawn (Candace), Alexander, Grayson, Loughlin, Ilina and Brandon; two sisters, Margaret (Murray) Hawkes and Marion (Alvin) Dickens and numerous nieces and nephews. Jan was born on January 15, 1923 in Winnipeg, MB where she graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. She entered the nursing profession one year after graduation as she was too young to enter the nursing class right from school. After a successful career as an operating room nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital and graduation from a six month course at the Yale School of Nursing in Connecticut, Jan joined the Canadian Army as a Nursing Sister. She was posted to Shiloh, MB and then to the British Commonwealth Hospital in Kure, Japan during the Korean War. There she met her future husband George, an officer in the British Army, who was on convalescent leave. They were married in Scotland on October 25, 1952 and lived in Stirling, Scotland for a number of years. George later transferred to the Canadian Army where he and Jan had postings in Nova Scotia, Ontario, New Brunswick, Germany and Manitoba. Upon George's retirement they moved to Lumby, BC where Jan continued her nursing career at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital where she remained until her retirement in 1988. Cremation preceded a celebration of Jan's life which will be held at the Lumby Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Lily Watson officiating. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so may send donations in memory of Jan to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation, #4-1551 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9. Funeral arrangements have been made with BETHEL FUNERAL CHAPEL LTD. 5605-27th Street, Vernon, BC V1T 8Z5 250-542-1187
