HELEN JACKSON July 19, 1918 September 29, 2009 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Helen Jackson on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 91 years. Helen was predeceased by her husband Roger Jackson (1996), sister Esther Zillman, brothers-in-law Paul Zillman and George Jackson and nephew Greg Zillman. She is survived by sister-in-law Margaret Jackson, brother-in-law Jim Jackson, nephew Richard (Paulina) Zillman, niece Wendy (Greg Robinson) Zillman, and many cousins. Helen and Roger, who was in the retail furniture business, lived in Winnipeg, Burlington, Calgary, and finally their retirement home in Whytewold on the southwest side of Lake Winnipeg. Since 1996 she lived at Summerland on University Crescent in an apartment on the 8th floor with a balcony overlooking the atrium. She always took great pride in the beauty and cleanliness of her home and loved to entertain visitors. Backyard barbeques for family and friends at her cottage and then home in Whytewold were a specialty. She was one of those rare people who never forgot a family birthday. She was always there to help celebrate a special occasion or to offer comfort and sympathy when it was needed. Helen was an especially generous person who took joy throughout her life in spoiling her nephews and niece. Her life as a widow was difficult because of deteriorating eyesight due to macular degeneration, but she was a fiercely independent lady and managed on her own with only a little help from Home Care. The radio, tuned to CJOB, was her constant companion. She faithfully followed the fortunes of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Goldeyes. She kept herself especially well informed of all the local news. She looked forward to dining out once a week with Rick and Paulina, often at her friend Lisa's Japanese Restaurant, and to shopping at the mall with her friend Joan. Visits to her Summerland home from out of town family members were always eagerly anticipated. She will be remembered with joy and affection by all who knew her. As matriarch of her small family she will be sorely missed. After recovering from major surgery at the Victoria Hospital and just prior to her sudden passing, she was looking forward to going back home. She has gone home A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
