LOUIS DELBAERE 1943 - 2009 Louis Delbaere passed away suddenly on Monday, October 5, 2009 at the age of 66 at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga. Beloved husband of Carol, father to Christian (Joy), and Michelle (Donald Sin), Papa to Noah, Malaya, David and John. He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Mary Delbaere; and his brothers and sisters, Albert (Madeline), Mauri (Donna), Raymond (Wendy), Frank (Judy), Teresa (Satish Kashyap), Linda (Vianney Vandewater), Roger (Lynette Husum), Irene (Phil Pines), Leona (Paul Vandale), Anne Morsette, Louise (Dean Scammell) and his 28 nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by his father Achiel; aunts, Martha, Alice, Mary and Adrian; Uncle Bob and brother-in-law Grant Morsette. Louis was born and raised in Saint Boniface, Manitoba, the third child of a family of 12. He attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a B. Sc (Honours Chemistry) and a Ph. D (Chemistry). He continued his training as a post-doctoral fellow at Oxford University. Louis spent 30 years teaching and conducting research at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Saskatchewan. X-ray crystallography was not only his career; it was also his passion. He published widely in this field, and contributed to the success of his graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He was a member of numerous scientific organizations, former president of the American Crystallographic Association, and was recently elected to the board of the International Union of Crystallography. Louis was a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Structural Biochemistry and a beamline team leader at the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. He received the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, and was appointed as an Accredited Ambassador of the Palais des Congrès in Montreal. Louis was active in the community at large, as a team member for the Christopher Leadership course for over 20 years and at St. Anne's Parish. He learned honesty, integrity, humility and service to others from his parents, Achiel and Mary, and he and Carol passed these on to Christian and Michelle. He valued love and loyalty for friends and family. He always had a positive outlook on life, and was able to see the potential in others and appreciated their successes. He eagerly anticipated the annual Delbaere reunion where he played Belgian bowling and Bien with his parents and siblings. Louis sincerely believed that it was important to attend family functions. He loved travelling, and he and Carol have lived in Oxford, Switzerland and New Zealand. His family expresses their sincere gratitude and thanks to the staff at Trillium Health Centre, including Dr. Peter Kan, Dr. Sameer Kumar, Jesse, Minh, Jon, Donna and Margaret. We extend a special thanks to Richard and Valerie Stove, who were our guardian angels during our time in Mississauga. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at St. Anne's Parish, 217 Lenore Drive, Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Louis Delbaere Memorial at the University of Saskatchewan.
