Walter is survived by Emily, his pillar of support and wife of 63 years; daughters, Arlene Cutts (Tom), Judy Reinke (Roy); grandchildren, Todd (Colleen), Jeremy (Simone), Julia Green (Ryan) and Forrest, four great-grandchildren and special nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Gilbert Plains, Walter travelled to northern Manitoba to trap and deliver mail by dog team. Soon he started one of the first mink ranches in the Sherridon area. Because of his expertise, he was invited by the Newfoundland government to relocate and teach others how to set up and run a mink farm. He declined and instead purchased the Hotel Cambrian and introduced tourism into the Sherridon area. Walter operated this business for most of his adult life. Walter was elected Mayor of Sherridon and held the position for 14 years, working to improve living conditions for all. He was most proud of his work with NACC (Northern Association of Community Councils) for the betterment of all the Northern communities. He felt his greatest accomplishment was forcing a settlement for the peoples affected by a hydro project that flooded South Indian Lake. Walter was a born storyteller and published a book at the age of 92. Walter was always ready to lend a hand to family members in any way possible, he was generous to anyone he perceived to be in need. He held a special place in his heart for the aboriginal people of the north.
