EMILY CECILE DESMET January 19, 1928 - October 8, 2009 It is with great sadness, her family announces the passing of Emily Desmet, daughter of Jerome and Helene Verhaeghe on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the Riverview Health Centre. Emily was born and raised in St. Boniface. Emily married George Demankoff in 1947 and with their daughter Linda, they moved to Edmonton in 1951 where they developed many life-long friends and her love of football. Emily returned to St. Boniface after George's death in 1962 to be with her close family and friends. Emily worked for many years at the Safeway on Marion Street and enjoyed socializing at the Belgium Club and the Norwood Legion. In 1964, Emily married Karel Desmet and embraced Karel's family as her own. They spent many happy summers at their cottage in Ingolf, ON and at their trailer in Mesa, AZ. Emily was known for her beautiful flower gardens and her love of knitting. Emily was predeceased by her parents Jerome and Helene, her husband George in 1962, and her husband Karel in 1996. Emily was also predeceased by her two sisters, Georgette Bruneteau and Rachel Sim, and her two brothers, Harry and Victor Nuytten. Family was the centre of Emily's existence. She is survived by her daughter, Linda and son-in-law, John Finlay; her grandsons, Andrew (Evalee) and Graeme (Carlotta); her sister, Zoe Gagnon and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Art and Elaine Desmet and their children: Randy (Fiona), Krista (Bruce), and Karla (Kerry); Rene and Mar Desmet and their children: Pam (Mark), Daryl (Etta) and Leah (Dion). She leaves many beloved great-grandchildren. The family will lead a celebration of Emily's life on Tuesday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald St. Should friends so desire, Emily requested that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., 675 McDermot Ave., RM ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9.
