Date of Passing: Oct 04, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY GEISEL (nee CHRIST) 1907 - 2009 Peacefully, on October 4, 2009, at the age of 102, Mary passed away at the Betel Home in Selkirk, with family by her side. She is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Edwin (Agnes) and Douglas (Linda), four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband Wallace, her parents, Anton and Eva, her brothers John, Peter, Joseph and Matthew, and her sisters Marian and Barbara. Mary was born in Brandon, and spent her early years there and in Daggett, Michigan. In 1937, she moved to Ochre River in Manitoba to work in her brother's hardware store. While in Ochre River she met and married Wallace. They settled on a farm and started their family. In 1949, the family moved to East Kildonan and resided there for 50 years. Mary spent her later years at the Lions Centre in Selkirk, and then at the Betel Care Home. Mary was a hard working and independent lady. Her good humour and optimism helped her face and overcome many obstacles and challenges during her long life. Mary's family would like to thank her neighbours on Oakview Avenue, and her neighbours at the Selkirk Lions Centre for their friendship and assistance while Mary lived alone. The family would also like to thank Dr. Zoppa, the staff at Selkirk General Hospital, and last but not least the staff at the Betel Home in Selkirk for their dedication, and care during mother's declining years. At our mother's request, there will be no formal service. Cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be interred with those of her husband Wallace in Brandon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Betel Care Home, 212 Manchester, Selkirk, MB R1A 0B6. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

Dear Douglas & Edwin, Although we've never met (unless when I was a baby) I wanted to let you know that I have wonderful memories of hearing my mother (Joan West) and her sister, Eileen Christ, talk about their Auntie Mary and what a wonderful person she was. What an incredible and long life she had! I signed up for Ancestry.ca a few years ago and have been learning more and more about my distant relatives. I wish I had asked more questions while my mother and aunt were still alive. My uncle Gerald Christ is still alive and well and living in Las Vegas. Through Ancestry, I have made contact with Brian Miller (Eva Christ Miller's daughter) and Wayne Christ (John Christ's son). Brian sent me a lovely letter, written by your mom to Eva in 1997. If you ever want to get in contact with me, please drop me an email. I don't always hear my cell ring.
