GUSTAAF LOUIS SURINX December 18, 1935 - October 12, 2009 On October 12, with his loving wife by his side, Dad finally got the peace that his body so deserved. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 42 years, Josephine; his children, Patrick (Sheilagh), Mark (Jodi), Linda (Kerry), and his six very special and much adored grandchildren, Zachary, Katie, Logan, Chloe, Tyson, and Raya. May the little ones take comfort in the fact that they were Bompa's greatest source of joy and that he will continue to live on their hearts. Dad was born in Diepenbeek, Belgium on December 18, 1935. Here he went to cooking school and became a chef. After marrying the love of his life, they immigrated to Winnipeg where Dad continued his career and they started their family. We have many fond memories of Dad but probably the most wonderful would be the yearly, month long camping adventures. Dad absolutely loved puttering around in the yard and there was never a time when he wasn't clearing the driveway long before the snow had stopped falling. He was also our very own Mr. Fix-it. And if we ever needed help with anything, he was there in an instant, with his tools in hand. Dad had such a soft spot for his animals and he spoiled them rotten - translation - fed them relentlessly from the table! Now given this, can you imagine how he spoiled the grandchildren? He loved his family with every bit of his being. Dad's golden years were not to turn out as we had hoped. He struggled with Alzheimer's for the last few years and Mom was his primary caregiver for the majority of it. The family wishes to extend our thanks to the wonderful staff on the 5th floor of Taché Nursing Home for their care of Dad and for never losing sight that this person, seemingly unresponsive, still had feelings, and that he was once a vital member of our society. They gave him dignity and comfort and for that we are thankful. We would also like the thank all who made Dad's passing as peaceful as possible. Should you wish, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9 or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. In keeping with Dad's wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service is planned for a future date. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E. J. COUTU CO.
