GERTRUDE (GERT) FRANCES HANDLEY (nee LAFRAMBOISE) Gertrude, born January 19, 1925, passed peacefully at the age of 84, on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Hospice in Victoria, BC. Gert is survived by loving daughter Bonnie Unke (Paul); four grandchildren, Jennifer, Tanya, Jesse and Sabrina, five great-grand-children, a wonderful family of four brothers and eight sisters who live in eastern Canada and many friends. Gert was predeceased by her husband Doug in 2000, her son David in 1988, her brothers, Sunny Boy in 1934 and Claude in 2008. Gert grew up in North Bay, ON and raised her own family in Winnipeg, MB. She also lived in Wetaskiwin, AB and Sidney, BC. She moved to Qualicum Beach, BC with her husband in 1993 and enjoyed her remaining years there, having many friends and immediate family around. Gert could be described as a feisty gal with a great sense of humour. Gert loved to spend her summers at the family cottages, playing cards and was an exceptional Bridge player. Her other favourite pastimes were reading, Scrabble, saving her Casino money for projects, golfing and watching baseball on TV. She enjoyed her precious pets, especially her latest Yorkie, Molly. A special thanks to Gert's doctor, whom she adored, Dr. Robert Waite, as well as those who provided loving care in her home and at the Hospital and Hospice in Victoria. A memorial will be held, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road, Parksville, BC V9P 2A9. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Victoria Hospice, Royal Jubilee Hospital, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, BC V8R 1J8 or Vancouver Island Cancer Clinic, BC Cancer Agency, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC V8R 6V5 would be appreciated.
