WILLIAM LINDLEY WHETTER January 26, 1911 October 19, 2009 All his life the Lord was Dad's Shepherd. On October 19, 2009 with our Mom at his side, Dad in his quiet manner entered into a new life with his Lord. Dad was born on January 26, 1911 on the farm at Dand, Manitoba. He was the third of four sons of Clinton and Annie Whetter. At an early age, Dad and his brothers took responsibility for their mother and the family farm. After a courtship of daily letter writing, Dad married Gertrude Dobbyn of Melita on July 3, 1943 and for 66 years; they were by each others side. In 1955, Dad was ordained into ministry in the United Church of Canada, serving in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and NW Ontario. Dad cherished the friendships made in each community that he served. Our Dad never lost his prairie boy heart. He loved the cattle, the crocuses on the hills overlooking Chain Lakes, sunsets and the changing seasons. Dad rarely traveled without his harmonica in his pocket, bringing joy and comfort to many. Mom described our Dad as a Christian gentleman and his thoughtfulness and kindness were for everyone. In 1996 our family was greatly saddened by the death of our sister Fran. As our family grew, Dad warmly welcomed each new member with pride and joy. Left to cherish his memories are his family: wife Gertrude, Helen (Les McCann), Bruce Ormiston (Marlene Wong), Jane (Stuart Manness) Grandchildren: Tom Ormiston (Kristen), Jill (Jon Faber), Karen Ormiston (Tyler), Angie (Darren Cormier), Peter Manness (Kristina), Betsy Manness (Burke), David Manness (Meghan), Great-grandchildren: Tyler Cormier, Sam Ormiston, Madison Manness, Luc Cormier, Jonah Faber, Charlie Ormiston. Our family would like to thank all of the staff at Riverview Healthcare Centre for their love and care for William . In Dad's words We are thankful for God's goodness. A celebration of Dad's life will take place on Thursday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 933 Summerside Ave., Ft. Garry. Donations can be made in honor of Dad to the M S Fund of the United Church of Canada or Canadian Food Grains Bank Box 767, 400-280 Smith Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2L4.
