JOHN PATRICK (JACK) SHIELDS John Patrick (Jack) Shields, 81, of Fort Smith, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, October 25, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born January 23, 1928 in Columbia, Missouri to Pat and Marie Shields. He grew up mainly in Wichita, Kansas. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Fort Smith serving in numerous capacities. He enjoyed serving those in need, in particular as a Eucharistic Minister aiding the sick in nursing homes for many years. He was also very involved in many Local and National Charitable Organizations. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Jack attended the University of Kansas where he received a degree in Geology in 1952. After working for Gulf Oil Company in Oklahoma City and Fort Smith, Jack formed his own Geological Consulting Company, which has grown into several energy-related companies now run by his sons. Jack was a member of American Association of Petroleum Geologist, Fort Smith Geological Society, and the Fort Smith Association of Professional Landmen. Jack loved to fish, duck hunt, and spend time with his family during the summer in Canada. While obviously the best fisherman of the family, Jack was frequently known to let his wife and kids claim credit for many of his catches. He is survived by his wife, Jean Marie Baldner Shields. Jack and Jean were married 53 years ago in Jean's hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon Nikmard and husband Jahan of Houston, TX, and Katie Shields of Fort Smith; four sons, Pat Shields and wife Mary of Fort Smith, Tim Shields and wife Lori of Fort Smith, Mike Shields and wife Ellen of Fort Smith and John and wife Suzy of Edmond, OK; one sister, Ann Cunningham of Wichita, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Kevin, Jim, Anna, Johnny, Cameron, Jack, Charlie, Henry, Megan, Mark, Abby, Emma, Haley and Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be said on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Mass will be said on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Clyde Goins, Tony Reith, Ed Seiter, Dexter Bates, Gene Bruick, Leo Anhalt, Bill Weidman, and Ron Mercer. Following the Rosary there will be a Wake in the Galvin Parish Center.
