KARL HAHLWEG With deep sadness, the family of Karl Hahlweg announces his passing on October 27, 2009 after a long and painful struggle with cancer. Remaining to forever cherish Karl's memory is his beloved Anni, his wife, partner and helpmate of 45 years; their sons, Brian and Chantal, Tim and Jodi, grandchildren, Kiera, Riana, Casey, Emily, his son Richard and daughter Debbie and Dave, grandchildren Matt, Kelli and Stefan and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents and his dearly loved brother, George. Karl was born in Poland on October 9, 1933. At a young age, his family suffered the loss of their beautiful estate and all their belongings when the war broke out. Following a few difficult years, Karl, his brother George and parents, Lucy and Alexander Hahlweg were able to enjoy some good years in Germany. He became a very good soccer player, scoring the winning goal for his team in the Wimbledon Stadium in England. Unfortunately, he broke his knee in that game and although it ended his dream, he never lost his love for the game. Karl played and coached soccer for many years in Winnipeg where his family immigrated to in 1954. After earning his journeyman's papers as a machinist in Germany, Karl spent 33 years in the employ of the CNR. He made many wonderful, life-long friends and used his skills to create an invention which earned him respect from both staff and management. Karl retired in 1991 and moved to his beloved home at Lake Forest Estates, just outside of Gimli. He earned the honour of being named soccer Coach of the Year a number of times while coaching his sons' teams for 11 years. He was also an avid shuffleboard player. On October 10, 2009, Karl was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Canadian Shuffleboard Champion. A funeral service to celebrate Karl's life will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gimli Lutheran Church in Gimli, MB. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to all the caring staff at the Gimli, St.Boniface and Grace Hospitals. Donations in Karl's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice if so desired.
