STEPHANIE SEMKOW (nee OPALICK) March 24, 1923 October 27, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Stephanie Semkow (Calgary) of natural causes at Foothills Hospital at the age of 86 years. She will be dearly missed by her loving son Brian W. Semkow of Hong Kong; her daughter and son-in-law, Tanis and Rod Carter of Surrey, BC; and grandchildren, Daniel, Brad and Matthew Carter; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Wally in June, 1994. Stephanie was born in Winnipeg, MB to Lena and Mike Opalick. There she grew up, met Wally, and married in June, 1950. They moved to Alberta and lived in many small towns where he was employed in the oil industry. In 1955 they settled in Edmonton and raised their two children. In 1972 they were transferred to Calgary. Stephanie truly enjoyed playing bridge, meeting new people, and entertaining family and friends. During Wally's retirement years they enjoyed travelling - snow bird trips to the US, visiting grandchildren on the coast, and leisurely cruises. After Wally's death, Stephanie continued with her activities and travelling, even as far as the Great Wall of China at the age of 74. Recently, Stephanie's health began to deteriorate. She was greatly admired for her dignity, inner strength, and courage with which she faced and survived her several medical challenges.
