Date of Passing: Oct 27, 2009
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySADIE ELLEN DENNIS (nee SAUNDERS) It is with our deepest sorrow that the family announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sadie Dennis on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Grace Hospital. Sadie was predeceased by her husband, Joe Dennis in 1990, and all her sisters and brothers. She will be greatly missed by the many people who knew her. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Pat (Ray); son Bruce; daughter-in-law Kathy; and grandchildren: Dorothy (Jimmy) and Laura (Scott), as well as great-grandchildren: Taylor, Sam and Jack, and Sadie's surrogate son, Rod McCurdy. Sadie was a remarkable woman; very determined, courageous and fearlessly independent. She was a gracious hostess; an incredible cook with the gift of outstanding food presentation; a mischievous prankster with a dry sense of wit and humour, always looking for the positive in people; a person who loved CAA cruises and travelling to various continents; a great card player; and always first class in her dress and pride of appearance. Sadie's passions were square and round dancing with the Whirlaway group, driving her car, and direct involvement in construction projects and gardening at her West Hawk Lake cottage. She was also involved with the Purchettes and a senior exercise class at Sturgeon Creek United Church. Sadie was a sociable, approachable, sacrificial kind and caring person. Throughout her life she made many sacrifices for family and friends, taking them into her home, caring for them as nurse, counsellor, surrogate mother and more. Many friends and relatives stayed at Joe and Sadie's home for weeks, months and even years as they recuperated from illnesses or established themselves in Winnipeg. Although her last stroke robbed her of some of her physical activities she still exerted her energy in other activities that involved her family, her many friends and acquaintances. Sadie enjoyed her outings at Golden West Nursing Home and St. James - Assiniboine Seniors Centre, teaching others how to play Kings in the Corner, sharing life's experiences and helping out in any way that she could. Even at the age of 94 she was still planning trips to Sydney, NS and an Alaskan cruise. Her sewing machine, still actively in use, was her treasured gift, producing all kinds of clothing, costumes and creative wardrobes for special events. Despite her challenging condition, Sadie extended consideration, kindness, love and strength beyond expectations, which she demonstrated right to the very end. The family was truly blessed to have Sadie as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Sadie's memory will be forever celebrated and cherished by all her family and friends. She was our English Rose . The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all Home Care workers, Winnipeg Paramedic Services and the doctors and staff at Grace Hospital for their delicate care and compassion. Also, to the many friends and family members who provided support, assistance and love during this difficult time. In keeping with Sadie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive (Portage Avenue at Thompson) Winnipeg, on Monday, November 9 at 11:00 a.m., followed later by a private interment at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends and relatives so wish, donations in Sadie's memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to a charity of their choice.
