ANTONINO (TONY) BATTAGLIA January 19, 1931 - November 14, 2009 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Antonino Tony Battaglia, on November 14, 2009 at the St. Boniface General Hospital. Tony was predeceased by his parents Francesco (1991) and Marianna (1993) Battaglia, and brother-in-law Giuseppe La Mantia (1992). He will be dearly missed by his wife of 51 years, Zina, his children: Maria, Frank (Carmelina), Salvatore; his grandchildren: Alexandra, Amanda, Paolo and Daniella as well as his sister Josie, nieces, nephews, extended family in Italy and Toronto and many friends whom he dearly cared about. Tony was born on January 19, 1931, in Termini Imerese, Italy. He left his beloved homeland in 1951 at the age of 19 to forge a new life in Canada. He worked for Maple Leaf Flour Mill and C.N. Rail until his retirement in 1994. Tony was an avid gardener and took pride in seeing the fruits of his labour flourish each year. He enjoyed sharing his great love of music with his family and enjoyed reminiscing about his days playing in the Blue Star Orchestra. But his greatest joy in life was his family and telling them stories of his homeland and heritage. He was a devout Catholic and came to the Eucharist every Sunday. A thoughtful, generous and caring man, he was selfless, waking up every morning with one thought in mind - loving and serving his family in every way. He was a man of great integrity, principle and always lived by his values. He had a wonderful sense of humour that he shared with all he knew. He was well respected and will be sadly missed but always close in our hearts. Sincere thanks are expressed by the family to Dr. Joel Gingrich at CancerCare Manitoba, Dr. Davinder Jassal at St. Boniface Hospital (Cardiology), Dr. Chau Pham and nursing staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Room. Pallbearers will be Frank Bullaro, Paolo Aquila, Leonard Schillaci, Pat Caligiuri, Romolo Fracassi, Salvatore Signorello, Loreto Mancini and Salvatore Iafolla. A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 19 at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Father Sam Argenziano. Entombment will follow at Holy Angel Mausoleum, Highway 1 East. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. Ti vogliamo tanto bene, nonno. Riposa in pace.
