ROGER GUDJON BENSON With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Roger, 62 years old, at the Arborg Hospital on November 14, 2009 after a brave struggle with cancer. Roger is survived by Doris, his wife of 40 years; daughter Leanne (Maurice Bouvier); son Boyd (Tracy); grandchildren Madeleine and Emily Bouvier, Kelsey and Kyle Benson; his mother Jonina Benson; sister Laureen (Greg Palsson); mother-in-law Thruda Floyd; sister-in-law Alice Finnbogason and brother-in-law Lorne (Lorna) Floyd; many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. Roger was predeceased by his father Louis (Gunnlaugur); father-in-law Harry Floyd; brother-in-law Lloyd Finnbogason and nephew Glenn Finnbogason. Roger was born on June 7, 1947 and grew up on Hecla Island. He married Doris on October 11, 1969. He worked at the Arborg Co-op until starting a 34 year career as a commercial fisherman on Lake Winnipeg. When he wasn't fishing, Roger was tending to the menagerie of animals the family raised on their farm near Arborg. Roger will be remembered for his sense of humour, his caring nature and his common sense approach to life. He loved his family, his friends, his dogs, his farm, fishing, hunting, trapping and Hecla Island. By example, he taught us to enjoy the everyday simplicity of life and always to care for each other. In accordance with Roger's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. His wish was that everyone remember him by the last joke he told them. A private family gathering will be held at a later date in Hecla for the interment. If friends so desire, donations in Roger's memory may be made to the Palliative Care Program, in care of Arborg Hospital, Box 10, Arborg, MB, R0C 0A0.
