PETER HYSKA Peacefully, in the arms of his family, Peter passed away on November 18, 2009 at the age of 89. His memory will be forever cherished by his girls , Stella, (his wife of 61 years), his four daughters and their families; Shirley (Wayne), Patricia (Jim), Gail (Steini) and Janet (Mike). Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren; Pamela (Ralph), Kristin, Jennifer (Gary), James (Jenn), Cheryl, Michael, Patrick, and great -grandchildren Kate, Kara, Stephanie, Matthew, Kurtis, Julia, Jack, Alexandria, Kianna, and Nolan. He will be greatly missed by brothers; Bud (Jean), Walter (Elsie) and sister-in-law Jean, nieces and nephews, extended family and the many friends that were part of his life. Peter was predeceased by his parents John and Mary (Soloway), sister Jenni, brothers Billy, Ivan and grandson by marriage, Ian. Peter was born March 9, 1920 and raised in Dauphin, MB. He joined the army in 1939 and served as a Trooper overseas with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons 18th Armoured Car Regiment until 1946. He married Stella Baydak in 1948, moved to Churchill in 1953 working as a Civil Servant for the DND. He also drove the local school bus, started Hyska Insurance and in his spare time built his family a new home. In 1961, he transferred to Winnipeg and worked at Kapyong Barracks until his retirement in 1983. Once retired he enjoyed golfing and relaxing at Spruce Sands where he would sit in front of the fire for hours. There were many cribbage tournaments and fishing trips especially with his brothers. He liked to travel and see new places. He spent the last few winters in Kelowna, BC which was his home away from home . His last big adventure was a cruise to Hawaii on a ship that provided dialysis. He was an active member of the church and the Canadian Legion. He loved to win at cribbage, play his accordion, listen and dance to old time music and was a regular at the Senior's social gatherings. His greatest pleasure in life was being surrounded by his family. Prayers will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23 at the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue. Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24 also at the church with Father Mark Gnutel officiating. Interment will be held in Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery. Pallbearers are James Antonick, Michael Bodner, Patrick Bodner, Robert Pacholuk, Blayne Hyska, Matthew Parsons, Gary Petrie and Ralph Alexander. Cheryl Antonick as the bearer of the Cross. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter's memory to the Health Sciences Centre Dialysis Unit, the Kidney Foundation, 730 Taylor Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3M 2K8 or the Elevator Fund for the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3M 1Y3. A heartfelt thank you to the doctors and staff at the HSC Dialysis Unit, GD3 GD4 wards, Emergency and to Dean from Home Care, for their kind and wonderful care of our beloved Peter. A gentle man with a gentle soul. He will be sadly missed but always close in our hearts.
