VINCENT GARFIELD BRUCE BURR July 9, 1920 - November 12, 2009 It is with great sadness, that the family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved father and grandfather at the Seven Oaks Hospital. He will be remembered by his daughter Catherine and husband Karl Purchase, grandson Matthew and by his son Angus. He was predeceased by his wife Muriel, a daughter Mary Geraldine, at birth and by his brothers, Russell and Henry Burr and his sisters, Jenny Copeland and Doris Honey. Vince was devoted to his family and to his community. He was a compassionate and generous man who maintained a positive outlook and a curious mind. He served on active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England, India and Burma. In his career, he was a Welfare Officer with the Department of Veteran's Affairs. He served as Trustee and Chair of the Board for the Seven Oaks School Division. He served as a Director and as President of the Adanac Credit Union now, the Belgian-Alliance Credit Union. He was a founding member and a Director of the Winnipeg One Hundred Club. He served as a Director of the Last Post Fund and received the Last Post Fund Long Service Medal and Bar from the Honourable Philip S. Lee, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, on October 16, 2009. He volunteered with the Christmas Cheer Board for many years, assisting in various positions. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, West Kildonan Branch and a member of the Rivercrest United Church. Vince was a sportsman. In his youth, he played basketball for Daniel McIntyre CI and St. Andrews. He enjoyed curling, fishing and golf and was a supporter of the Winnipeg Jets. He was a founding member and a President of the West St. Paul Curling Club. He was an Honourary Life Member of the Manitoba Curling Association and the Past President Association of Manitoba Curling Clubs. He enjoyed fishing with friends at lakes in northern and southern Manitoba. He played golf at courses around Winnipeg and posted a hole in one at the Charleswood Golf Course. The family's heartfelt thanks go out to the many friends and acquaintances who have given their support and kind words during this difficult time. In accordance with Vince's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate and give thanks for his life will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations in Vince's memory may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation, Siloam Mission or a charity of their choice.
