Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN COLIN (JACK) HANNA November 15, 1928 - November 21, 2009 John (Jack), husband of Alice Hanna, passed away at Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg on the evening of November 21, 2009. He was 81. The fourth child of the late Wesley and Claire Hanna, Jack was born in his family's farm home at Keyes, Manitoba. He is predeceased by his brothers Robert (who died in infancy), Murray, Lloyd and Doug. He leaves behind his loving wife Alice; daughter Jane (Scott) Mayo; son Ian (Anita) Hanna; grandsons Graham Hanna, Jeffrey Mayo, Eric Hanna and granddaughters Caitlin Mayo and Sarah Hanna. Jack is also survived by his brother, Bill (Angie) Hanna, sisters Ruby Hanna and Betty (Stan) Stewart, brothers-in-law Roderick Hogg, Ross (Joanne) Hogg, Dr. James Hogg (Dr. Wan-Cheng Tan) as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many treasured friends and business colleagues. Jack attended Preston Elementary School and Gladstone High School. For several years, he was an active participant in the Gladstone Music and Arts Festival. He was a member of the Gladstone United Church Choir, where he was admired for his strong, fine tenor voice. His working career started at the Gladstone Creamery, where he enjoyed driving to farms around the community in his cream truck. In 1951, Jack and his brother Bill travelled to Northwestern Ontario where the brothers worked in the logging and pulp industries. In 1952, the pair left for Sioux Lookout Ontario to work on the Canadian National Railway. His 42 year-long career in the insurance industry began in 1954 with Metropolitan Life. He was transferred to Winnipeg in 1954. In 1966, Jack took a job with Prudential Assurance, a company that was taken over by Mutual Life of Canada in 1994. During his lengthy and distinguished career in the industry, Jack received LUATC accreditation. He was a natural-born salesman and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. During his career, Jack travelled for business and pleasure around the world including Hawaii, Bermuda, London and Oxford, England. Jack retired in June of 1997. In retirement he enjoyed his home and family life, motor trips, reading and doing research for a family history. John's family is extremely grateful for the wonderful care he received at Bethania. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the educational institution of your choice. Jack was a strong believer in the merits of higher education and encouraged his wife, children and grandchildren to pursue this to the utmost of their abilities. John was a strong and courageous man. He had a strong sense of duty. He cared for his family and was generous to all. He will be missed. Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Interment will follow. Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
