EILEEN APPLETON (nee POWELL) January 7, 1928 - November 21, 2009 After a lengthy illness, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Eileen Appleton on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Tuxedo Villa Care Home at the age of 81 years in Winnipeg. Eileen will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Ken of 56 years of marriage, and her two sons, John and Peter. She is also survived by her sisters, Gwenda, Raina, and brother William. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Dorcus (Williams) and by her sisters Mary and Vera. Since Eileen was a very caring person, her desire to help others led her to a career in teaching. After graduating at Bangor University, Gwynedd, Wales, she began her teaching career at the age of 23 in Liverpool, England. Five years later inspired by a pen pal friendship; Eileen aspired to travel, immigrate and settle in Winnipeg where she finally met her pen pal Irene Melnick. After moving to Winnipeg she continued her career as a teacher in Charleswood at Chapman school and later taught and retired from Beaumont school in 1984. Eileen was a dedicated teacher, an adoring wife, and caring mother. Eileen was especially interested in playing tennis and enjoyed annual vacations to Clear Lake. On Saturday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. Eileen's funeral service will be held in the St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Boulevard at Haney St. in Charleswood. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. Special thanks for the wonderful care to the staff of the Tuxedo Villa Care Home, Deer Lodge and Grace Hospitals. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Eileen's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
