PHILIP STEPHEN ANWYL 1940 - 2009 The world became a poorer place when Philip Stephen Anwyl died peacefully at the age of 69 in St. Boniface Hospital on November 19, 2009. Phil is survived by his brothers Patrick (Elizabeth), Peter (Ellenor) and his sister Jane (John Leggett); niece Bronwen, nephews Henry and Charles and his dear friend and close companion, Joan Elson. He is also survived by many close friends who regarded him as family, too many to mention, but one must be singled out - Gerry Hart - who looked after Phil during his last weeks. Phil was born on September 16, 1940 in Rhyl, Wales, the second son of Bill and Kay. He was raised and went to school there. After school he went into journalism and for the rest of his career was never anything but a newspaperman, and a good one. After a brief fling at freelancing, he began work for the East Anglia Daily Times in Ipswich. In 1969 he made the move to the Winnipeg Free Press, where he spent the rest of his career. Most of that career involved being the Business Editor of the Free Press and a mentor to many young reporters. His legacy can be found, through them, in newspapers across Canada and in the United States. Phil was an active member of the Winnipeg Press Club and served as its treasurer for several years. His discourses at the bar on a wide range of issues will be fondly recalled. Phil will be sadly missed by his friends and family. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald. Come and say goodbye to our friend. -30- The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.
