LEILA EVELYN WOODS, R.N. On December 3, 2009 Leila, beloved wife of the late Robert G. Woods, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. Leila was born on December 18, 1937 in Alpine, MB. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Betty Mayer. She is survived by sons Rob (Alyson), Dwight (Stacey), estranged son Kevin. She is also survived by her grandchildren (David, Kyle, Elyssa, Aynsley and Cole), great-grandchildren (Aimsley, Charlie, Mia), brother Albert (Gina), sisters Irene, Dorothy (Alex), Lynn (Gene), as well as numerous special nieces and nephews. She graduated from Benito High School and received her R.N. diploma from the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1958. She spent many years caring for patients at the Swan River Hospital, Pinawa Hospital, Deer Lodge Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, Stony Mountain Penitentiary and Heritage Lodge. She enjoyed taking flying lessons in Carmen, Manitoba, where she eventually soloed. For many years, she volunteered with children in need - specifically guiding horses for children with disabilities and The Teddy Bear Picnic. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of her life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, at her request, donations may be made to the Society for Crippled Children of Manitoba. The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff at the Grace Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Leila over these many months. There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of one small candle. In moments of discouragement, defeat and despair, there are always certain things to cling to, little things, usually: remembered laughter, a meadowlark's call, a tree in the wind - in fact any reminder of something deeply felt or dearly loved. No person is so poor as not to have many of these small candles. When they are all lit the darkness goes away and a touch of wonder remains . How far that little candle threw her beam ...
