CLARA STEFFENSEN Clara Steffensen, aged 86 years of Gimli, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Betel Home Gimli on December 7, 2009. Clara will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her sons Gregory (Mary) Stevens, Richard (Beverly) Stevens, grand-children Tracy (Adam) Stringer, Alicia (Michael) Thompson, Mark Stevens, Kris Stevens and great-grandchildren James, Emily and Owen Stringer. Clara was predeceased by her husband Carlo in May of this year, first husband Franklin Stevens in 1981, sister Lorraine Olson in 1988 and brother Elert Einarson in 1993. Born in Gimli in 1923 Clara moved to Winnipeg to train as a nurse after graduating from Gimli High School. She graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and worked in Winnipeg for a number of years. She moved back to Gimli and married Franklin Stevens in 1970, at that time she was Director of Nurses at the Gimli Hospital. In 1975 she became the Director of Care at Betel Nursing Home and worked there until her retirement in 1984. She married Carlo Steffenesen and they had many happy years in retirement, going on several trips to Europe, Denmark, Iceland, Alaska, Hawaii, and the U.S. Clara was a kind and caring nurse, a career she loved. She was a member of the Icelandic National League, and was also an animal lover, always giving support to animal shelters. A Memorial service will be held at the Gimli Lutheran Church on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment of ashes will follow in the Gimli Community Cemetery. We would like to thank The Betel Home Staff for their compassion and care, their kindness was very much appreciated. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Gimli Humane Society, Betel Home Foundation, or a charity of your choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
