JOHN (JACK) SAMUEL ROGERS O'MALLEY Our cherished husband and father died gently on Saturday morning, December 5, 2009 at Deer Lodge Centre with the love of his family holding him safe and warm. Jack was born at home in Riverview on June 18, 1919 during the Winnipeg General Strike. He grew up and attended school in the area, graduating from Kelvin High School. Upon graduation he worked for the Bank of Commerce before joining the army in 1939. He served with the 2nd Division in Sicily, Italy and Holland until the end of the war in 1945. He continued to serve in the 39th Field Artillery reserves until 1961, retiring with the rank of Major. In 1946, he met and married his wife of 63 years, Betty Earl. Jack and Betty lived in River Heights and raised their family (Trish, Wendy and Brian) there. During that period Jack worked for the CIBC for 38 years, retiring in June 1979 as Regional Manager of Administrative Services. He was an active member of the Manitoba Protective Officers Association for many years during his banking career. Following retirement, Jack was a committed volunteer at the Manitoba Provincial Archives. He and Betty also enjoyed many summers with their family and friends at Victoria Beach, where the O'Malleys have had a cottage since the early 1900s. Jack served as the first Secretary of the VB Cottagers Association. They also enjoyed winter getaways to Mexico, their winter VB, and travelled extensively in Europe. Shortly after their 60th wedding anniversary, a stroke forced Jack to move from their new condo to Deer Lodge Centre. The family wants to express its sincere appreciation to the amazing staff at Deer Lodge Centre - Tower 7, who took such wonderful care of Jack for the past three years. Their capacity to provide care with dignity and love is beyond description. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Deer Lodge Centre early in the New Year. A notice with particulars will be published then. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
