ELWOOD (SONNY) FREEDY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. On December 5, 2009 Elwood Freedy or Sonny as known to many, peacefully passed away with his family by his side at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 76. Sonny was born on October 25, 1933 the son of Harry and Pearl Freedy of Dry River, Manitoba. He relocated with his parents to Baldur, Manitoba where he finished his schooling, then left home to work at the C.P.R. in Winnipeg as a dispatcher. He retired 35 years later as an assistant supervisor for the customer service centre. Sonny married the love of his life, Fern Slater on November 24, 1956 at Holy Trinity Church. Together, while he was in the hospital, they celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Sonny was never one to sit idly; in addition to his 35 years at C.P.R. he spent time as a roofer, carpet cleaner, delivered for Jeanne's Bakery, worked for Dan's Diamond Drilling and as a grounds keeper for Eleanor Saluk and Tinker Town (thank you Eleanor for never forgetting a birthday). He finally took a rest after his last but most rewarding time spent at Lakeway Marine working with his friend Neil Fewchuck. Sonny's happiest moments however, were spent at his cottage at Lee River, fishing, hunting, gardening and spending time with friends, Alice and Larry, Gordon and Milly, Barb and Gordon and Susan Dyck, were times not easily forgotten. (Thank you Susan for always looking out for him). Special mention to Kim and Elaine Cheung. Sonny was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Muriel, Nells, Grace, Claire and Shirley, Jack, sister-in-law Ethel, and infant son Jamie. He is survived by his wife Fern, son Lindsay, daughter Kelly and son-in-law Jerry (Arsenault) and his grandchildren Amber and Jordan, sister Verna (Roy), Diane (Abe), and sisters-in-law Helen, Iris, Val (Russ), Shelagh (Doug) and families. He will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6. You were everything to us, Until we meet again, We will love you forever and always.
