JOHN (JACK) FAIRLEY HUTCHISON Peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Concordia Place, Jack Hutchison passed away at 95 years of age. Jack was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 28, 1914. He immigrated to Altoona, PA, U.S.A. with his parents when he was about nine, and moved to Winnipeg at the age of 12, where he attended Luxton School. Jack worked as a printer for Commercial Stationers in the early 1950s. He was ahead of his time and established and ran the first typography business in Western Canada, Hutchison Typography Ltd., in Winnipeg in 1956. A printer and an artist, he was able to blend the two by being a typesetter who offered stylish typeface design to many advertising agencies in Winnipeg and Western Canada before the word font became a household name. Many of his ads appeared in the pages of the Free Press in modern stylish typefaces, the first of their kind in the 1950s. Jack lived in the East Kildonan area for over 60 years. He is survived by his son Bruce (Jo-Anne), two grandchildren, Jeff (Colleen) and Robert, and three great-grandchildren, Chantel, Alec and Leena, with another expected in the New Year. He is also survived by his sister Betty Lake and her two sons. He was predeceased by his wife Grace in 1998 and by his parents Archibald and Elizabeth. He was a special, unassuming, soft-spoken, thoughtful man who was loved by almost everyone he came across. He loved gardening, calligraphy, the symphony, and most of all other people. He will be sorely missed. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, December 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel located in Concordia Place Care Centre, 1000 Molson St. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and nursing aides at the Concordia Place Care Centre, particularly Regina and Celso, all the home care staff with Home Care prior to his placement, particularly Maggie and Shelley, and all others who were involved in his care over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory may be made to the Concordia Hospital Foundation.
