DOREEN V. STROPLE July 31,1925 - December 8, 2009 It is with deep sadness that the family of Doreen Strople (nee Caughey) announces her peaceful passing on December 8, 2009 at River Park Gardens in Winnipeg. She is survived by a son Mark (Nettie) and grandson Braden Strople; a daughter Tracy (Wes Christie) of Winnipeg, and granddaughter Ashlen Christie of Indianapolis IN. She is also survived by her sister Madeline Garrett, and nieces Doreen Pattie (Bob) and Audrey Simpson (Gordon) and their respective families; sisters-in-law Marie Pos of Ajax, ON and Laurel Sherlock of Rexdale ON and brother-in-law Robert Strople (Elsie) of Brantford ON and many nieces and nephews will also mourn her loss. She was predeceased by her mother Madeline Mott (1940), a daughter Marina (1957), father Frederick Caughey (1963), husband Jack (1963) and brother-in-law Russell Garrett (2004). Mom was born in Winnipeg, and lived most of her life on Palmerston Avenue. She attended Laura Secord School, Gordon Bell High School, and St. Mary's Academy. Doreen proudly graduated from the Grace General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948, and following graduation she nursed at Deer Lodge Hospital where she met Jack Strople. She married our father in 1953 at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Winnipeg. Dad's military career took them to Toronto, where Mark John was born in 1956, and then Calgary where Tracy Ann joined the family in 1961. After Jack's death Mom moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to her sister Madeline, who helped Doreen with her young family. It was important to Mom that we maintain a close relationship with Dad's family, so frequent trips were made to visit them in southern Ontario. Mom continued her nursing career at the Rehabilitation Hospital (now part of HSC), and the King Edward Hospital, retiring from there in 1989. Mom's favourite pastime was letter writing, and she kept in close contact with nursing classmates and pen-pals around the world. She was a loyal Winnipeg Blue Bomber season-ticket holder of 40 years (1964 to 2006). After retirement, Mom loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Europe, Hawaii and across Canada. She was a lifetime member of St. Margaret's Anglican Church. Mom's life was fulfilled with the arrival of grandchildren, and she took great pleasure in attending Braden and Ashlen's many activities. She loved to have them in her company, and they loved her deeply in return. They each hold very special memories of Grandma. Doreen loved all animals, but always had a special place in her heart for Tracy's dogs, and enjoyed their visits despite being attacked' with kisses. In recent years, despite Mom's wish to stay in her home, she was unable to continue to live her very independent life. For a short while she lived at the Rosewood Village, and in October of 2008 moved to River Park Gardens. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at both facilities for their outstanding care and genuine affection for Mom. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Ethelbert Street and Westminster Avenue, on Monday, December 21, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to St. Margaret's Church.
