JACOB REIMER November 27, 1921 - December 9, 2009 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our dear father and grandfather. All of his children and grandchildren were able to be with him over the last few days. Jake was born in a farmhouse near Morden, MB to parents Agatha and Jacob. He grew up in Altona, MB, where he eventually met his wife Clara. They were married in Altona in 1948, and then lived throughout Manitoba until they settled in Winnipeg in 1953. Jake was predeceased by Clara in 1988, and by his granddaughter Sarah in 1986. He leaves four children, Warren (Linda), Grant, Glenn (Joanne), and Brenda; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Jocelyn), Laura (Kelly), Amanda (Bryan), Daniel (Janice), Mark (Kristen), Clare and Joseph to mourn his passing. He was proud of his children, and delighted in watching his grandchildren grow and succeed. He was always loving, generous and caring. He also leaves his sisters Anne and Eva (Eileen); brothers Diedrich and John (Helen), as well as John Reimer-Dorratt and many nieces and nephews. Jake left Altona to join the Air Force and served throughout the Second World War. After the war, he went to the University of Manitoba, where he got his Bachelor of Agriculture degree. He graduated in 1949, and started work for the Province of Manitoba in the Assessment Branch. He stayed with the Assessment Branch for 35 years before retiring in 1984 as Director of the branch. As part of Jake's work he and Clara visited every province and territory of Canada. Soon after retirement, he was appointed to the Municipal Board where he worked part-time for another 11 years. Jake and Clara enjoyed traveling and visited Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Fiji and Australia. Their time together was cut short when Clara passed away of A.L.S. in 1988. Jake was an avid curler in his youth at the Altona Curling Club and in Winnipeg at the Strathcona Curling Club. He was very active physically. He ran a marathon in 1979, and loved cross-country and downhill skiing. He walked daily year-round for five to eight miles until diagnosed with cancer at the age of 83. Family vacations were always skiing trips in the Rockies and camping trips all across Canada. He and Clara purchased a cottage at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell in 1962. He rebuilt the cottage in 1975. He loved his time spent at the lake and it was always an anticipated event to watch Grandpa go for his annual water-ski well into his late 70s. The cottage is still a cherished summer gathering place for all of the family. A Memorial service will be held in the Heritage Room at Lindenwood Manor, 475 Lindenwood Drive East at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15. Please use the Heritage Entrance. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jacob's name to CancerCare Manitoba, ON1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or the ALS Society of Manitoba, Room N108-2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3.
