Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRANCES EMILY GRANT 1918 - 2009 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the sudden death of Frances Emily Grant on November 20, 2009, in her 92nd year. Frances will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Catherine Noton and Patricia Grant-Bloxom; sons-in-law, Mark Noton and Bob Bloxom; grandchildren, Charles and Steven Noton; Grant, Jacqueline and Caitlin Bloxom; along with many nieces and nephews. Frances was predeceased by her husband Alfred, son David and her granddaughter Jane Noton. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Arnold and Finlay, and four sisters, Elsie Smith, Gwen Curtis, Marguerite Reid and Bernice Scott. Frances was the sixth of seven children born to Mary Emily and Charles Gerdis on the family farm in Regent, Manitoba on February 2, 1918. She received her education in the Wapaha District and graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1941. After graduation, Frances worked at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and then at the Ninette Sanitorium. She moved to Portland, Oregon and worked in an Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic before joining the United States Army in 1943 as a flight nurse based in Randolph Field, Texas. Upon discharge, she returned home and nursed at the Souris Memorial Hospital. Her life was enriched when she met and later married the love of her life, Dr. Alfred Malcolm Grant. They had a wonderful partnership until Alfred passed away in 2001. Frances was a loving, caring mother and active supporter of community events in Souris. She co-founded the kindergarten and school band programs and worked many volunteer hours with the figure skating club. After their children were raised, she worked with her husband, Alfred, as an office receptionist at the Souris Medical Centre for 15 years. Upon retirement, she and Alfred became snowbirds vacationing with their friends in Florida and California. She delighted in her bridge games and all the people with whom she played over her lifetime. Frances also enjoyed her yard and her flower gardens and always looked forward to socializing with her friends and neighbours. Her dance card was always full. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Cram and the nurses at the Souris Hospital for the care that their mom received. If friends so wish, donations in memory of Frances may be made to the charity of their choice. A Celebration of Life was held on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the St. Paul's United Church in Souris with Rev. Mark Murray of the St. Luke's Anglican Church officiating. Interment was at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon. Kowalchuk's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be made at dkowalchuk@mts.net
