HENDRIK BAKKER Peacefully, in the early hours of December 11, 2009, at the age of 77 years, Hendrik Bakker was called home to his Lord and Saviour, thus ending his 19 year affliction with cancer. Henk was predeceased by his parents Hendrik Gezina (nee Oosterhuis) Bakker, two brothers, and four sisters. Henk will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 55 years, Annie (nee Wiersema); his children Henry (Jo-Ann), Richard (Arlene), Andrew (Deanna), Theodore (Deborah), Selina (Douglas) Tiel, Debora (Edward) Minderhoud; 25 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sisters Yellie (Jacob) Kleiker, and Sienie Boonstra. Henk was devoted to his wife and children to the end. Henk was born on January 9, 1932 in Hoogkerk, Holland, where he met Annie. In 1952 he followed Annie to Winnipeg where they were married in 1954. Although trained as an electrician in Holland, after working several jobs in Winnipeg, Henk began his 40 year career with Powell Equipment. Henk's many practical skills enabled him to grow, build, fix and maintain almost anything. He was a devoted member of Providence Reformed Church. He was a respected member of the church community and served the Church in many capacities over his lifetime. He drew satisfaction from things done in accordance with God's Word, and always strived to be His faithful servant. Henk's sense for adventure led many memorable summer family vacation road/camping trips. This trait continues in his children. Funny situations or stories always brought out a good laugh from Henk. During his 16 years of retirement, Henk did not let his illness stop him from living life to its fullest. He and Annie continued to travel and camp. He spent many days fishing with friends, and keeping up the house and gardens. Special thanks to John Vandenberg for being a long-time close friend, and to the staff a Riverview Health Centre for their loving and compassionate care. Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 653 Knowles Ave. with Rev. J. Poppe officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henk's name to Cancer Care Manitoba. Well done, good and faithful servant.
