ALFONS BADERL With deep sadness, the family announces the passing of Alfons Baderl on December 14, 2009, at the Riverview Health Center, at the age of 75 years. Alfons is survived by Kay, his wife of 54 years; son John and his wife Krista; sister Monica (Bill) Gerullis; brother Hans (Else); and many nieces and nephews. Coming to Canada from his native Austria in 1953, Alfons began his working career as a machinist. Next, he studied and worked as a draftsman. After a time, he returned to university to obtain his degree in education and taught school first at Beausejour, and then at the Comprehensive High School in Selkirk until his retirement in 1996. During his working years, Alfons was heavily involved in coaching both track and field and soccer, and mentoring his many students who affectionately knew him as Mr. B. Unassuming in his demeanor, Alfons possessed an appetite for life in all its aspects, and the wonders of nature. He particularly enjoyed mountain hikes with Monika and Bill. Latterly, watching weekend soccer games, especially when Manchester United was playing, gave him great pleasure. Funeral service will be held Friday, December 18, at 1:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers, if friends wish, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON 109-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, R3E 0V9 or to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, R3T 5K9.

  • Mr. Baderl was my geography teacher in high school. I admired him. He was the only teacher I'd given a gift to in my high school years. I happened upon his obituary eight years late, when he came to mind and I looked up his name. He was a kind man. - Posted by: Abe Belhassen (former student) on: Jan 17, 2017
