MARY ALICE WARREN (nee Koonz) It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Mary Warren, 72, on December 15, 2009 at the Grace Hospital. Mary is survived by her husband of 51 years, Culver; her two sons, Robert (Cindy) and Richard (Julie); and her three grandsons, who were truly the light of her life: Nathan, Owen and Thomas. Born on March 4, 1937 in Shawano, Wisconsin, Mary was the elder sister to Bill Koonz and Helen (Koonz) Warren, both of Shawano. After graduating high school Mary moved to Minneapolis to work for an advertising firm. It was here that she met Culver when he was vacationing in the Twin Cities. Following a brief courtship, Mary and Culver were married in Shawano on November 8, 1958 and moved to Winnipeg soon after. Before meeting Culver, Mary had never been to Canada, but she quickly fell in love with the people and the beauty of the country. Mary spent all but two of her years in Canada living in St. James. She greatly enjoyed the area because of its sense of community and the many friendships she developed there over the years. These experiences inspired her to become a Canadian citizen in 2003. Mary played a variety of roles during her life: wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her favourite role was that of a stay-at-home mom who watched her boys grow into men of strong character. She also enjoyed working outside the house for such organizations as Marshall Wells, St. James Collegiate and Camco. Mary had many passions in life that kept her involved with the community: her membership in the Khartum Temple Ladies' Auxiliary; an enjoyment of bowling; and her love of cooking - she was famous for her broccoli soup. No public service is scheduled at this time; however, a memorial of Mary's life will take place in the spring of 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba, The Children's Rehabilitation Hospital or The Khartum Patient Transportation Fund.
