CORNELIUS ANDRES It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Cornelius Andres, at his home in Winnipeg, on December 20, 2009 at the age of 90 years. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Anna, his daughter Evelyn Froese (Peter), his son Corey (Eleanor), grandchildren Rachel Sydor (Kevin), Alison Froese Foster (David), Philip Andres, David Froese and Andrew Froese, two great-grandchildren Nicholas Sydor and Clara Sydor, all of Winnipeg, and sister Kaethe Murans (Albert) in Latvia. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maria (Woelk) in 1984. Born in Chortitza, Ukraine on January 7, 1919, he survived many hardships until immigrating to Canada in 1949. Here he worked for 35 years as an engineer at Fleming-Pedlar Ltd. in Winnipeg. On an emotional and memorable occasion he was reunited with his sister, Kaethe, in 1988, after a separation of 45 years. He was a quiet and a dignified man, and he endeavoured to retain his independence as long as he could. He faced up to life's many challenges bravely and with his own wry sense of humour. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, Notre Dame and Alverstone. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) (manitoba.mcc.org) or to a charity of your choice.
