Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT GRANT One week after celebrating his 90th birthday with family and friends, Albert Grant died on Christmas morning, after enjoying his morning cup of coffee with his beloved wife, Mary, with whom he celebrated 38 years of marriage this past summer. Albert leaves two sons: Rick and Les. He also leaves stepson Barry (Marlene); grandchildren Dane, Ashley, Chris (Alana), Cassie (Dave); great-grandchildren Luke, Isaac and Ethan; and daughter-in-law Nancy. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. Albert is survived by a sister, Norma. He was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Leah, and sister Rose; as well as stepson Reynold. Albert was born December 18, 1919 in Winnipeg's North End. He sometimes recalled the early years, taking the streetcar downtown and working with his father trading horses. A proud Second World War veteran, he served overseas as a supplies driver, was severely burned and recovered in hospital. Upon returning to Canada, Albert joined the Winnipeg Fire Department, ultimately serving as a Captain, and retiring in 1984 after 40 years service. His firefighting years were a source of great pride for him, and he often entertained his grandchildren with stories of the hard work as well as camaraderie that came with wearing the firefighter's uniform. Al developed a passion for cooking during the War, and honed his skills as an outstanding cook during his years in the fire hall. No one ever went away hungry when Al was cooking. Another of his passions was shopping. He was a regular at the local Superstore, where he never failed to check out the daily bargains. In summertime Al loved to sit outdoors with Mary in their gazebo, enjoying conversations with neighbours and family who would drop by to visit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Firefighters Burn Fund. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday December 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with a reception to follow. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
