His kind and gentle soul will live on forever in God's spirit and in our hearts. George was born on the family farm in the municipality of Rosser on November 17, 1922, to Robert and Elizabeth (Rita) Comrie. Along with his older brother Bert and younger sister Audrey, he attended Little Mountain School. George moved to Winnipeg to attend Daniel McIntyre High School and United College. He graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba in 1944. Following graduation, George served in the Canadian military until the end of the war and soon after began a successful career as an agronomist. He worked for Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) from 1947 to 1964 which took him to Saskatoon, Regina, St. John's (NL), London and Chatham (ON). In 1964, George moved to Winnipeg to join Sherritt Gordon Mines as a regional marketing manager in their fertilizer division. In this position he travelled extensively throughout the prairie provinces prior to retiring in 1982. In 1948 George married Lorraine Anders and they were happily married for 58 years until Lorraine's passing in 2006. George was also predeceased by his parents, his brother and sister and by Lorraine's siblings and their spouses Winston and Helen Anders, Thurston and Jeanette Anders, and Robert and Genevieve Clarke. Left to cherish his memory are children: Bruce (Lesly), Wayne, and Joanne (Paul) O'Driscoll and Paul's daughter Erin; grandchildren Allison and Jennifer Comrie, Warren and Brett Comrie and their mother Shelley Wenger, and Billy Blackwood and his father John Blackwood. George will also be missed by sister-in-law Irene Comrie, brother-in-law George (Isobel) Nichol, nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had a quick smile, a quiet sense of humour and a genuine interest in others. We will remember his kind support and sense of fairness to all. He was a true gentleman. George had many interests and talents including photography, travelling, cycling and gardening. He enjoyed volunteering with the Western Canada Aviation Museum and other organizations. We are deeply grateful to the home care workers and the staff and friends at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence who brightened George's days with their kindness for the past four years. We also thank the exceptional nursing staff at the Grace Hospital. We invite family and friends to a celebration of George's life to be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, Winnipeg with the Reverend Bill Corkum officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish may make a donation in George's name to the Parkinson Society Manitoba or to the charity of one's choice. NEIL BARDAL INC. George and Lorraine were my god parents when myself and my family lived in St. John's, Newfoundland. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. I was glad to have the opportunity to see both of them again from 1999 to 2004 when visiting Winnipeg. I missed seeing George in 1974 when he saw my parents when we were living in Saskatoon. My father, Al Murray and myself like to extend sympathy to Bruce, Wayne and Joanne. - Posted by: Paul Murray (Acquaintance) on: Jan 05, 2010
