MARIE OAKLEY 1923 - 2010 Mom passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010 following a brief struggle with cancer. She had been blessed with good health virtually all her life, and her days were usually filled with great spirit and life. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Linda, her sons, Norman (Dianne), Raymond (Lynn), and Gordon (Janet), 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. Mom was predeceased in late 2003 by Dad (Charlie) and earlier on by one son (Lorne) and her brother (Russell). Born in McCreary, Manitoba, she married Dad in 1944 with 59 years of their lives having been spent together. Winter holidays with Dad and summers at the family cabin brought her much enjoyment. Mom is best remembered for her excellent cooking, her love of animals (there were many family pets), and for welcoming family and friends. She always enjoyed company wherever and whenever that might be. She was an avid reader, an ardent traveller (right up to a few weeks prior to her passing), and was a whiz at crossword puzzles and scrabble. She lived independently for the last few years in her home and subsequently her condo, taking on challenges few her age would consider. The family would like to extend special thanks to Mom and Dad's longtime friends and neighbours, Ken and Joyce Wankling, who were like extended family to them. A Celebration of Mom's life will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
