GUNNAR NOAH JOHANNSON It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gunnar Johannson, age 93 years, on January 6, 2010, at the Selkirk General Hospital. He was predeceased by his daughter Karen, in 1991, his wife Mae in 2002 as well as his brothers Oscar, Joe, Harold and Barney and his sister Inga. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters Bunnie (Ron) Hutchinson and Brenda Johannson (Dave Cooper) and son Ronald (Marilyn) Johannson, his nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, a sister Edie Allen as well as many other family members and friends. Dad was born in Piney, Manitoba on December 3, 1916. The family moved to Selkirk when he was just a young boy and he grew up there. He worked for a short time at the Manitoba Rolling Mills until he married his sweetheart and moved to God's Lake to become a miner in 1938. Dad worked as a miner for the next 43 years, moving to Flin Flon, then Snow Lake and finally retiring back to his hometown of Selkirk in 1981. Dad's life was one well lived with love and devotion to his family beyond all measure. He and Mom were married for 63 years. He spent many years caring for his daughter who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis and later his wife who suffered from Alzheimer's. He touched the lives of many people with his gentle and caring nature. He always kept a positive outlook on life and rose above every challenge. Music was always a big part of Dad's life from The Fifty Fingers Orchestra in the early days to the Glee Club in Flin Flon, church choirs and the Selkirk Community Choir. As well, Dad curled and was an active member of the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church. Gunnar's family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Lindenschmidt and the wonderful staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the tender loving care he received. Also a huge thank you to the Home Care workers and the staff at the Woodland Courts for their excellent care over the past few years. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. To live in the hearts left behind is not to die. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
