ALBERT VICTOR MILANI May 13, 1927 - January 9, 2010 Albert Victor Bert Milani passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on January 9, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer, and shortly after the passing of Betty, his wife of 58 years, in September. Bert was born to Joseph and Grace Milani on May 13, 1927 in Indian Head, SK. Bert grew up on the prairies in the 1930s with his brothers, John and Ron, and sisters, Margaret and Helen. He often spoke about being poor but not really knowing it because of the love and hard work of his parents. Bert was predeceased by his sister Margaret and his parents, as well as by his loving wife Betty in 2009. Bert joined the army in 1944 at 17 years of age and then enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1946. Bert was posted to Trenton, ON in 1947 where he met and married Betty Ray, his friend and fishing partner for life. After the birth of their first child, the family was transferred to London, England in 1953. There were then a series of postings to Moose Jaw, Centralia, Ottawa, and finally to Air Command Headquarters in Winnipeg where he retired in 1981 with the rank of Major. Along the way the family grew to include five children. Upon retirement Bert and Betty spent their summers with their dear friends at Whiteswan Lake, north of Prince Albert, SK and the rest of the year entertaining family and friends at their Charleswood home. Bert could make or fix anything. He spent untold hours helping his children build their homes and lives. He always had time to help when and wherever help was needed. Bert fully enjoyed his time spent camping, fishing, and hunting with his family. He passed a true love of nature and the outdoors along to all of his children. Bert and Betty made many friends over the years and enjoyed keeping in touch with each and every one of them. Left to celebrate Bert's life are his five children: David (Anne), Karen (Jamie), Craig (Tammy), Rob (Kimberley) and Kim; six grandchildren: Sam, Matthew, Jenny, Ryan, Katherine and Davis, and two great-grandchildren: Kasey and Maddon. A celebration of Bert's life will be held at Headingley United Church on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be served at the church. At Bert's request and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, or the charity of your choice. Bert's family extends their appreciation to the entire 3-East Wing staff at Riverview Health Centre and CancerCare Manitoba for their kindness, compassion and care, while Dad was in their capable hands.
